I make paintings of the wilderness and in cities and little towns before dawn that bring to life that awe-filled mystery of being alive on this planet.

“Instructions for living a life: Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.” We are more divorced from the natural world than at any time in our species’ history; the average American spends 93% of their time indoors. I think we need the tonic of wildness; that it feeds something important in us. I make paintings of the wilderness and in cities and little towns before dawn that bring to life that awe-filled mystery of being alive on this planet.

This is a place where I spent much time hiking, on the back side of Mt. Tamalpais. This is from an early morning hike.

Pool At Night 1980 – 2010 31″ x 56″

I started this painting in college, and ended up finishing it very many years later. Foolishly, I was painting it from memory, and thought it was impossible to save, but fortunately I had taken photos late one night back then, and I worked from them.

This is from a trip I took back to Vermont, where I worked many years before at the Farm and Wilderness camps.

This was my first painting done after my long career detour. I had hiked through here many times, and it seemed a natural first friend to paint.

1984

This is the first painting I finished that I could stand. At the time I was working as a waiter, having recently moved to California. These are old slides so I apologize for the low quality.
